I’m sure you all heard about the supposed end of the world that was meant to occur on Saturday at 6pm (quite an exact time I thought!) which obviously didn’t happen. It’s easy to laugh at the people who came up with the “theory” that the world is going to end, but you have to feel slightly sorry for them too (even though I don’t think they showed much concern when they gleefully thought the vast majority of the human race were going to be killed in horrible natural disasters). Most will try to explain it by saying “it’s a test of our faith” but that can only work to a certain extent surely.
The problem with this sort of thing is that it makes the entire Catholic church seem less credible. The man who came up with the theory is going to make lots of money so he’s happy, but religion as a whole comes across as out of touch with reality and slightly crazy.
When you hear stories about people giving away their life’s savings just to buy bill boards advertising the end of the world you have to wonder what was going through their heads. If the end of the world is going to happen then it’s going to occur no matter how many bill boards are up, so why do you need to advertise it? It’s amazing that people could have been so sure about something like this that they were willing to risk their children’s college fund that it’s true.
