Is it easier to get a virus?

There seems to be a lot more viruses going around the internet these days and it’s becoming easier and easier to get them. In the past you could be fairly certain that if you didn’t visit dodgy websites or open an email attachment that you wouldn’t get a virus. Today you can get viruses just by clicking on an image result in Google if the site you’re clicking on is setup as an infectious website. It’s a shame because the internet could be ruined by things like this if more isn’t done about it.

The most common at the moment seem to be fake virus checkers which pop up a message saying that the computer has been infected. To remove the infection you need to buy a virus checker – which is actually just a fake bit of software and often another virus! The problem is that these types of scams are very believable and it’s easy to see how someone who doesn’t have much experience with computers could be conned into spending their money and giving away their credit card details.

If you get one of these fake virus checkers then whatever you do don’t buy the software. Instead contact someone who knows a lot about computers and ask them to get rid of it properly for you. If you buy the fake software then not only are you wasting money but you’re also handing over your credit card details to a criminal who can then do what they want with it.

So The End Of The World Didn’t Happen

I’m sure you all heard about the supposed end of the world that was meant to occur on Saturday at 6pm (quite an exact time I thought!) which obviously didn’t happen. It’s easy to laugh at the people who came up with the “theory” that the world is going to end, but you have to feel slightly sorry for them too (even though I don’t think they showed much concern when they gleefully thought the vast majority of the human race were going to be killed in horrible natural disasters). Most will try to explain it by saying “it’s a test of our faith” but that can only work to a certain extent surely.

The problem with this sort of thing is that it makes the entire Catholic church seem less credible. The man who came up with the theory is going to make lots of money so he’s happy, but religion as a whole comes across as out of touch with reality and slightly crazy.

When you hear stories about people giving away their life’s savings just to buy bill boards advertising the end of the world you have to wonder what was going through their heads. If the end of the world is going to happen then it’s going to occur no matter how many bill boards are up, so why do you need to advertise it? It’s amazing that people could have been so sure about something like this that they were willing to risk their children’s college fund that it’s true.

Wii 2 Rumours

The Wii has been one of the most successful consoles of all time – even though I don’t think it’s been  great success when it comes to games. There are some great games on the Wii, but they all seem to be made by Nintendo. There are very few third party games that you can imagine anyone caring about in a few years time. There are also far too many minigame-type releases and gimmicks.

Even so, I’m not at all surprised that there have started to be rumours about the successor to the Wii. Apparently – although none of this is confirmed – the Wii 2 will be backwards compatible with all Wii games. This means that Nintendo are going to stick with their motion control which is definitely a good thing.

Another rumour is that the power of the Wii 2 is going to be more than the Xbox 360 and PS3. This is good news, although I think most people would be disappointed if a new console wasn’t able to beat the previous generations when it comes to power. Obviously most Wii games don’t rely on graphics, but if Nintendo want to start getting back the hardcore gamers as well as the casual ones then they’ll have to improve the capabilities of the system.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens with the Wii 2 and whether it’ll be such a success. I’m sure that the other companies won’t be far behind in announcing their new consoles either, so 2012 could be an interesting year for gamers!
